The bits in between

Like many missionaries, we found that our social, spiritual and work life in Fiji tended to intermingle as one.  There was no divide between the sacred and secular, between work and play.  Looking back now I can see how God used that to help me unlearn some very ingrained Western thinking: that my value is matched to my productivity.  My mind still, at times, struggles to not let my sense of identity and worth be defined by the notion that “since I’ve been given much, I must accomplish much”.  Our culture labels certain tasks as significant whilst undervaluing others, yet God calls us to be faithful in the small things first.

Our pastor at the Canberra International Church reminded us a few weeks ago that our number one purpose is simply to be in relationship with God.  This purpose can be fulfilled through loads of laundry, early morning walks or sitting with a friend, just as much as the work we pursue for RescueNet.

I notice that even here in our blog we tend to focus far more on what we do, what we achieve, rather than the bits in between, which are equally important in sculpting our lives.  We most likely will continue to be rather task-orientated, but for 2018 I would like to see my contentment not be dependent on how much we do to further the work of RescueNet, but in every moment given as opportunity to practice the art of worship.  So in honour of ‘doing it all for His glory’, here are some snapshots of our life outside the RescueNet office:

Since returning to Canberra we've moved out of our room in the main building and been given this demountable as our new home - with it's own bathroom (yay!)
Since returning to Canberra we’ve moved out of our old room in the main building and been given this demountable as our new home . It’s great to have our own bathroom (yay!) and more space, although the night time possum parties on the roof are rather loud at times…
