Life in the Big Yellow House

Bula! We are now 7 weeks into our Discipleship Training School and wanted to give you all an update on how things are going. We hit the ground running after Vanuatu and found ourselves living with 8 fellow students (2 Fijians, 1 Indo-Fijian. 1 Aussie, 1 Brit, 2 Danes and 1 US), 2 of the staff members and 7 of their children. Some have compared it to the Big Brother house without the cameras. Thankfully there haven’t been any evictions so far.

Yellow House
Before

Each weekday morning we would have classes from visiting speakers, who also live with us for a week at a time. They are from all over the world and are missionaries or pastors. The quality of teaching has been incredible, not least of all because of the wealth of experience each one has brought. The topics have included the nature & character of God, forgiveness, prayer, hearing God’s voice, addiction, family and the father heart of God, amongst others. Alongside this we have had times of practicing intercession, worship and listening to God. We have also been personally ministered to and this has resulted in many revelations and deeper understanding for each of the students. We’re only halfway through the teaching phase and already we have seen significant positive changes in ourselves and our relationships.

Tau Village
After

In addition we have had medical workshops each week which have helped prepare the students for the outreaches, the first of which was a one-week visit to Tau village. Although the setup of the clinic was similar to previous outreaches, the overall experience felt very different due to the unity of the team and the natural emphasis on the non-medical aspects. Worship and prayer were ever-present as patients sought spiritual care in addition to physical treatment. It was a testament to Fijian culture that the two can coexist so seamlessly.

Outside Clinic
Busy as usual

Particular highlights were a visit to the local school where we sang, performed drama and talked with the kids about dental health, as well as an evening church service which we led.

Kid Line-Up
Chillin’ with the kids
Tough kids
That baby’s got attitude

Our experiences so far would have us recommend this school to everyone. We have some more weeks of classes before the start of the outreach phase which will take us further afield.

Till then…
